Participant Text Sets

This text-set aims to provide resources that showcase the diversity of modern day immigrants in the US through a focus on immigrants and refugees throughout the US and particularly communities in Memphis, TN. The text-set challenges preconceptions and stereotypes of immigrants from East Africa, Central America, and the Middle East to not only deepen understanding of the immigrant populations and the refugee experience, but also to help create more inclusive classrooms for these modern day populations to be viewed by teachers and students alike beyond their stereotypes.

This text set provides a glimpse into the attitudes towards Indigenous people in California and provides resources showing the contributions of Indigenous groups as well as what is being done to maintain and restore knowledge of the groups.

The purpose of this text-set is to illuminate Afro-Latinx identity, otherwise referred to as Afro-Latinidad. It uses a variety of texts, from podcasts to picture books to academic studies to explore the complexity of Afro-Latinidad and some of the historical and cultural forces that have significantly contributed to it.

This text set features children’s literature, young adult novels, documentaries, interviews, and teacher resources that highlight the Hmong refugee experience. Minnesota is home to the second largest Hmong population in the United States, just behind California. Hmong Americans in MN have set down roots in St. Paul and the surrounding suburbs.

This text set intends to explore Identity and human connection of the borderlands people (Native Nations, Mexican, American) beyond political borders and national identity. The resources hope to highlight Native Nation voices and the interconnectedness between the identities of the border to promote empathy between our countrymen.

The theme and purpose of my text set is to showcase the history and culture of Asian immigrants in America. We focused on Chinese, Filipinos and Japanese in the state of Arizona during the 1900s to 2000s. In this project, we can learn and experience the challenges and opportunities of these exotic cultures through different modalities.

The decision to cross the international border between Mexico and the United States has long been a risky one. Immigrants seeking safety, employment, or a better life on American soil have been subjected to cruel and dehumanizing government practices, from the chemical baths at the El Paso International Bridge in the early 1900s to family separations and sub-par detention centers existing across the country today. Dangerous conditions have existed for immigrants whether they cross the border legally or not- as demonstrated by the government run Bracero Program of the 1940s and 50s.

Part of the 8th grade curriculum in my district includes a mini-unit on the Tohono O’odham at the beginning of the school year. I knew so very little about these people whom I’ve lived practically next door to and still live there today. Every year I’ve taught children from the Nation. This text set has taught me much already and now I’ll have the resources at my fingertips and be able to share it with my peers.

The focus of this text set is to understand the evolution of different communities within Columbus, Ohio. The resources depict the diverse cultures and complicated relationships that have shaped the communities. The set includes primary and secondary resources as well as illustrated texts meant to provide flexibility for both age group and time.

This text set looks at ways in which women shape the environment globally across history and in the present. There is a focus on hearing from women that tell their own stories and examining art, agriculture and food.
